This was a surprise. Along Feb 16, Valve's Dota 2 Twitter accounted dropped a teaser trailer for a spick-and-span anime series happening Netflix called Dota: Dragon's Blood, premiering in March. A few days later it followed up with a yearner look at the series and Sir Thomas More inside information about who's making information technology.

Even if you aren't a Dota player, there May be ripe understanding to atomic number 4 excited for this series. The animation studio behind it, Studio Mir, also made The Legend of Korra and Netflix's Voltron reboot.

Simply how the heck do you adapt a multiplayer game look-alike Dota into a story-driven animated series? If you haven't read a wiki's deserving of Dota lore, will you have any idea what's going on? Present's what we know most the plat, characters, and creators of Dota: Dragon's Blood.

Who's making Dota: Dragon's Blood?

The Dota serial is created and written by Ashley Edward Miller, who also has credits as a Centennial State-author connected the screenplay for the first Thor film in 2011 and X-Hands: First Course of instruction. Previously atomic number 2 wrote on the TV serial Exterminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Miller is besides executive producer on the Dota series.

In united of many tweets about the series, Miller onymous some of the other writers working on Dragon's Blood:

The name near likely to be familiar to animation fans, though, is Studio apartment Mir, the Korean aliveness studio behind Korra and Voltron. Studio apartment Mir besides worked on The Boondocks season 4, a Guardians of the Galax series, and is behind another upcoming Netflix stake version: The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf down.

Mir's series' incline to use a mix in of 2D and 3D animation, and that looks the likes of IT'll continue with Dota: Tartar's  Blood. From the initial laggard, I have to sound out it looks bad Nice.

Netflix released a full Dota: Dragon's Blood dawdler

Netflix initially released many little teasers for Firedrake's Blood, going us with plenty of questions. Just this latest full trailer gives US a much longer look at the series and umteen of the characters starring in it. To a greater extent on them below.

There's also a trailer that explains the broader Dota lore, to gift context of use for the anime's place setting to non-Dota fans:

Dota: Dragon's Blood premieres March 25

The serial is exclusive to Netflix and releases on Borderland 25. There are eight episodes in the first season.

Will there be a second season? Good wonder—Netflix likely won't say anything about a second harden until Dragon's Blood debuts. But it's not being called a limited series, so a prolongation seems likely.

Which characters are in Dota: Dragon's Blood?

The star of the Netflix series is Flying lizard Knight, aka Davion, but atomic number 2's not the only Dota hero in the series. Draco's Lineage is legitimately pulling from Dota traditional knowledge, here. Mirana, Princess of the Moon, is some other key character. Miller tweeted that "the bond that forms betwixt [Davion and Mirana] is the sum of our she." Mirana's companion Luna is also part of the main cast.

Other characters include Slyrak, the Coal Eldwurm, and the Invoker, whose real name is Carl, according to the Dota wiki. I can't tell you how bright it makes me that "the smartest being in the universe," in Miller's words, is called Carl.

There are some characters in Dragon's Blood created specifically for the bear witness, too, and Dota lore fans may be psyched to see the Goddess of the Daydream, Selemene, come on on screen.

Also breathtaking: There's quite a good voice cast lined dormie for this series.

Here are the voice actors in Dota: Dragon's Blood

  • Davion - Yuri Lowenthal
  • Mirana - Lara Pulver
  • Invoker - Troy Bread maker
  • Slyrak - Tony Todd
  • Luna - Kari Wahlgren
  • Selemene - Alix Wilton Regan
  • Bram - Josh Keaton
  • Kaden - Anson Put on
  • Fymryn - Freyja Tingley
  • Drysi - Stephany Jacobsen
  • ??? - JB Blanc

Troy Baker is the biggest advert here from the videogame world, with roles like Joel from The Last of Us and Booking agent DeWitt in Bioshock Infinite. Yuri Lowenthal is too big in games—most recently he played Peter Charlie Parker in the PlayStation 4 Spider-man.

Kari Wahlgren has been in loads of cartoons, including the DuckTales and Animaniacs reboots and Wrick and Morty. The most interesting cast member, to me, is probably Lara Pulver, who has mostly been in hot action series quite than animation. She played Irene Adler alongside Benedict Cumberbatch in the modern BBC Sherlock Holmes.

What's Valve's involvement with Dota: Draco's Blood?

The Dota: Dragon's Rake trailer says "In collaboration with Valve" just a few seconds in, indeed the developers of Dota 2 give birth clearly had some input with the freshly series. (Valve besides trademarked "DOTA," which probably comes into shimmer Here). Just how up to their necks is Valve, really? A tweet by showrunner Ashley Miller gives us only a vague idea:

The official Dota 2 blog mentions that the Dota  2 client will have a Dragon's Lineage "division" where Valve will be sharing more news about the series.

Does Davion accept a courier?

Also: WHO's playing jungle? There are for sure to be a few Dota in-jokes in Dragon's Rake, merely hopefully the first 5 episodes aren't devoted to the the laning phase and denying creep kills to the enemy team. Davion might not have a flying donkey courier, simply helium does let a squire named Bram, so maybe one episode will be all about him walking plump for to town to fetch a potion.

Wes Fenlon

Wes has been covering games and computer hardware for more than 10 years, front at tech sites like The Wirecutter and Tested before joining the PC Gamer team in 2014. Wes plays a little act of everything, but he'll e'er jump at the chance to cover emulation and Japanese games. When he's not obsessively optimizing and re-optimizing a tangle of conveyor belts in Cheering (it's really comme il faut a problem), he's probably acting a 20-class-old RPG or some opaque American Standard Code for Information Interchange roguelike. With a sharpen connected writing and editing features, he seeks out personal stories and in-depth histories from the corners of Microcomputer gaming and its ecological niche communities. 50% pizza pie aside volume (deep dish, to glucinium specific).
